Big Sur Elopement at Henry Miller Library | Gypsy Tales Photo
Vanessa and Richard’s Big Sur Elopement in Big Sur, CA was intimate and sweet. The couple stayed at Post Ranch Inn and had a whole weekend of celebrations planned along the coastline all the way to San Luis Obispo. I am happy to have been a small part of their weekend, by documenting their ceremony on one of the most popular days to get married this year – 11/11/22.
When Richard first contacted me he described their exact vision, “A wedding along the cliffs of Big Sur. The library, to contrast the longevity of love with the timelessness of literature.” I mean, how could I not be thrilled to hear that such beautiful thought went into choosing the venue. I also loved how they chose to document both the ragged coastline of Big Sur and the majestic coastal redwoods. If I were planning to elope in Big Sur, I would do the same.
Henry Miller Memorial Library is a nonprofit arts center, bookstore, and performance venue, documenting the life of the late writer, artist, and Henry Miller. They often host beautiful music and art events, open mic nights, book signings and allow private events. They allow smaller elopements and larger weddings, but book way ahead as this is a popular local spot!
It’s easy to understand why Henry Miller Library is a great choice for a wedding. It has a very unique charm. From the moment you pass the front gates, it feels like you stepped into a tucked away corner of the world where time stopped.
Big Sur Redwood Elopement Locations
Even thought there’s no shortage of Redwood spots along the Big Sur coast, finding a spot to get married among the redwoods can be a challenge. The best solution, in my experience, is to do exactly what Richard and Vanessa chose for their big day. Having a ceremony at a venue allows you to have full control. You have a place for getting ready, first look and a romantic night. From this base, it’s easy to head out to the coast for an intimate couple’s session or a picnic at sunset, or both!
Some of my favorite Red Wood venues are Big Sur Lodge, Glen Oaks Big Sur, Ventana Big Sur and of course Henry Miller Library.
Getting Ready at Henry Miller Library
Vanessa and Richard got ready at Post Ranch Inn. We spent minimal time putting the finishing touches, making sure the groom was ready. Meanwhile, Vanessa arrived to the venue and for the guests to head down to the ceremony spot and get seated.
Vanessa had these gorgeous heels she planned on wearing during the ceremony, but walking on the soft forest floor was going to be a bit tough. We made a compromise as her Mother and Father helped her walk as close to the isle in slippers, before putting on those gorgeous heels.
Richard was waiting for his bride to arrive while a local musician played the guitar.

One of my favorite photo moments of the day was witnessing both the groom and bride cry together after reading their personally written vows. The sun came out just in time for this special moment. I am not sure there was a dry eye in the audience.
The couple also had both of their children partake in the ceremony. That is always the sweetest to witness and capture.
Every moment of their elopement was personal and well-planned.
Group Wedding Photos
After the elopement ceremony, we gathered all of the couple’s closest family and friends for group photos. Both Vanessa and Richard were excited to head down the coast for an evening reception in San Luis Obispo, so we got some amazing shots in record time!
We took another few minutes to document a few intimate images of them as husband and wife.

I don’t often shoot in the mornings, but when I do… I am really not even sure why I was nervous 🤷♀️I miss living in Hawaii and shooting sunrise as much as I short sunset!
So here’s the thing. I am obsessed with Pfeiffer Beach, but it’s a tricky one for various reasons. One of those being wind, and not the good kind. Made it work with one of my favorite families, but I have definitely had to reschedule that location before. Iykyk!!
I haven’t yet met a toddler who didn’t like being thrown in the air. Although, there are times that they aren’t into it, like if they are hangry…or in a middle of a random meltdown. I am certain all of us have been tossed up in the air by one of our parents at some point in our childhood ✨
I know I already said it, but I’ll say it again. The most rad couple at one of my favorite beaches. Bonus gorgeous sunset…the most memorable evening ✨
